Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get there?
The Cabin and Kluane Ecotours is at km 219 Haines Road, 27 km south of Haines Junction, Yukon or 219 km north of Haines, Alaska.
See map here. Watch for The Cabin's Highway sign at the entrance to the property.
Where can I pick up groceries or visit a restaurant?
Haines Junction has a bakery, grocery store and several restaurants, only 15 minutes away. Whitehorse, the capital city, is a 2½ hour drive and is the main supply point with more variety and choice of produce and restaurants.
Do the cabins have running water?
Cabins are supplied daily with 5 gallon water containers, but there is no running water. Our central wash house has showers and flush toilets, with outhouses near each cabin unit.
What are the weather conditions in your area of the Yukon?
The weather, as usual, is unpredictable. Before heading out, check the sky and temperature. It's recommended to "dress in layers," take water and a basic survival kit whether you're fishing, hiking or exploring.
What should I pack for clothing?
Pack for both warm and cool temperatures. The sun shines well into the late evening, but nights can be cool. Rain gear is handy, especially if you plan to hike into an area to stay overnight. Depending on conditions, hiking boots, a sun hat, and a wind breaker is important.
Will I see wildlife?
As always, wildlife viewing is up to chance. But your chances are good in Kluane with high populations of Dhal Sheep, Mountain Goat, Moose and Grizzly. Always keep your eyes open and remember what you see and what sees you can be two different things.
What can I do for outdoor recreation?
If you like the outdoors, you'll love Kluane. Most popular activities are flight-seeing over the glaciers, river rafting on the Tatshenshini, and day or overnight hiking in Kluane. For the more leisurely, try boating and fishing, photography, canoeing or kayaking or simply sight seeing.
What do I bring for hiking in Kluane?
If you plan to day hike or overnight you definitely need the appropriate gear – backpack, hiking boots relative to the weather and the terrain, a sun hat, bug repellant, water bottle etc. Feel free to give us a call or email. We'll answer all your questions.
